Before You Sell a Digital Download: A Simple Product Checklist
A buyer should not have to guess what happens after paying for a download. Whether you are preparing a worksheet, a prompt collection or a small-business template, the product needs to be understandable before purchase and usable afterwards.
Here is a practical preparation checklist for a first release. It focuses on the customer's experience, rather than the number of pages or files in the package.
Describe one clear result
Write a sentence explaining who the product helps and what they can do with it. “A repair-job tracker for a one-person phone shop” tells a buyer more than “the ultimate business bundle.” List what is included, the file formats and any software needed to use them.
For example, a fictional tracker package might contain a blank spreadsheet, a demonstration copy using invented data, and a one-page instruction sheet. Explain whether it works on a phone and what you have actually tested.
Let the customer inspect a sample
Show an honest preview of the actual product. A spreadsheet preview can show the column names and a filled example; a guide can show its contents page and a short extract. Avoid a mockup that makes the package appear larger than it is.
Payhip's current help documentation includes downloadable preview files as an option when adding digital products. Other selling platforms may provide different preview and delivery tools.
Test the finished files
- Open the exact download you plan to deliver.
- Check spelling, page order, links and filenames.
- Try a realistic task from start to finish.
- Remove private information and hidden sample customer details.
- Make sure you have permission to include each image, font or third-party asset.
Explain delivery and support
State how the buyer receives the files and where to ask for help. Describe the permissions you intend to grant, such as personal use or use within one business. Do not promise resale rights for material you do not own.
Before choosing a checkout service, check its current seller eligibility, payment methods, payout arrangements and fees for your location. A platform's upload feature alone does not establish that its payment setup fits a Nigerian seller.
Keep the first release small
Ask a trusted tester to use the package without coaching. Write down where they get stuck, improve those instructions and keep a dated master copy. A smaller download that solves its stated problem is easier to support than a large collection of unfinished material.
