Android Now Lets You Move Passwords and Passkeys Between Managers More Safely

Changing password managers used to be awkward. Many people had to export their passwords into a file, then import that file into another app. Google has introduced an Android transfer process that moves passwords and passkeys between participating managers without requiring that download.
What changed?
Google announced the feature on 10 September 2026. To begin, open the password manager you want to use and choose its import or copy option. Android finds eligible managers already on your phone. You then review and approve the transfer in your current manager. Google says the process supports Google Password Manager, 1Password, Bitwarden and Dashlane, with more partners planned. It is compatible with Android 8 and later, though availability can depend on the apps and their current versions.
Why it matters
A plain password export file can be exposed if it is left in Downloads, shared by mistake or backed up somewhere unexpected. The new flow avoids that file during supported transfers. It also lets people move passkeys, which previously often had to be set up again for each account.

- Update Android and both password manager apps.
- Open the manager you want to move to and find its import or copy option.
- Choose the existing manager when Android presents it.
- Read the account and item details before you authorize the move.
- Check several important logins and passkeys in the new app before removing access to the old one.
