INEC Announces 57,000 New BVAS Devices Ahead of 2027 Elections

Bagale Pulse News Brief | 6 October 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission says it has acquired 57,000 additional Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices as preparations continue for the 2027 general elections.

Nigeria Info reported the announcement on 6 October 2026, following remarks by INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan at an Abuja workshop with media executives and the Nigerian Guild of Editors.

Amupitan said existing machines were also receiving software, battery and biometric improvements. BVAS is used to check voters’ identities through fingerprints or facial recognition during accreditation.

The commission also described work on electronic result management and the polling-unit result form used within that process. The chairman presented the changes as improvements to established systems ahead of the polls.

Acquiring devices is one part of election preparation. Their practical value will depend on deployment, reliable operation and the handling of problems on polling day. The announcement therefore provides a preparation update, rather than proof of how the election itself will perform.
