SQL Transactions: Keep Related Changes Together

Moving money or stock through separate statements can leave half a change behind if one statement fails. This guide gives you a small, testable way to approach the issue before changing a live system.

A practical workflow

  1. Wrap the related updates in a transaction and check affected row counts before committing.
  2. Simulate a failure between steps on a test database and confirm rollback preserves the prior state.

What to check

Isolation and retries still matter when two clients change the same rows concurrently. Compare the result with the original problem and record what changed. If a measurement or test does not support the change, revisit the assumption rather than adding more complexity.

Keep the experiment small enough to reverse. Document the starting state, the change and the result so another person can repeat the process. Product menus and versions can change, so check the current documentation for your environment.
