Premier League Analysis: How to Tell Whether a High Press Is Working

Bagale Pulse Football Analysis • 1 of 30

A team can run hard without pressing well. For anyone watching Premier League football, the useful question is whether the pressure removes the opponent’s options. This guide offers a way to judge the press during a match without relying on the noise of the crowd or a single turnover.

Follow the second defender

Imagine a striker charging at a centre-back while the opposing midfielder remains free behind him. A simple pass can take the striker out of the game. Now imagine the nearest midfielder stepping forward as a winger closes the route to the full-back. The first runner has support, and the ball carrier faces a different problem. Watch whether teammates move together before deciding that a team is pressing effectively.

Count useful outcomes

A press can succeed by winning possession, forcing a rushed clearance or sending play backwards. It can also fail despite producing one spectacular tackle. Over a ten-minute period, note how often the opponent escapes into space, where the ball is recovered, and whether those recoveries produce controlled attacks. Use the same definitions for both teams.

Check the space behind

The defensive line must decide whether to follow the press upfield. If it stays deep, a large gap can appear in midfield. If it advances, a well-timed run may threaten the space behind it. A complete assessment includes both the pressure on the ball and the protection behind the players applying it.

What to watch next

Next time you watch, follow the nearest three teammates of the pressing player. Their positions usually explain more than the sprint itself.

An evergreen tactical guide. Scenarios are illustrative, rather than reports of a particular fixture.
