Spain at EURO 2024: What Wingers and Full-Backs Created Together
Bagale Pulse Football Analysis • 10 of 30
Historical tournament analysis: Spain’s wide combinations at EURO 2024 show how two players can create several different problems from the same side of the pitch. UEFA’s technical report highlighted the relationship between Nico Williams and Marc Cucurella.
The documented example
UEFA described Spain’s width through Williams and Lamine Yamal and examined how Cucurella’s movement complemented Williams. Sometimes the winger moved inside and the full-back provided width; on other occasions the full-back moved inside while the winger stayed wide. These are observations from EURO 2024, not claims about a current club or national-team system.
Our analysis: avoid a predictable lane
Imagine a defender who knows the winger will always cut inside. They can prepare their body position accordingly. Add a teammate who can run outside or inside and that decision becomes harder. The runner does not have to receive the ball to influence where the defender moves.
Timing matters more than constant movement
An overlapping run made too early may be easy to track. An underlap made when the ball carrier cannot pass may achieve little. When evaluating a wide partnership, watch whether the supporting run begins as the winger receives, whether the route remains open and whether another player is available if the defender refuses to follow.
What to watch next
Choose one wing and track who provides width on each attack. If the answer changes, ask whether the changes are confusing the defence or merely exchanging positions without progress.
